Sensory Approaches in OT Clinical Practice

This one day workshop outlines the theory and practical strategies essential to integrate sensory approaches into OT service delivery. By supporting the growth of skills and proficiency in developing a sensory lens, OTs can apply the concepts and strategies to any number of occupational roles and functions, to promote functional gains and independence for consumers. The content of the workshop included:

·         Definitions, theory and evidence base of sensory modulation

·         Introduction to the sensory system & sensory preferences

·         Introduction to the concept of a ‘sensory lens’

·         Application of a sensory approach in the areas of assessment, clinical interventions, and environment.

·         Embedding sensory approaches in mental health service delivery with practical examples, case studies and exercises to brainstorm strategies to implement in the workplace.

·         Building on sensory skill base - additional techniques/ training/ resources/ education options

Using Sensory Modulation with Aged Care Residents

These one day workshops are designed for staff (allied health, nursing, medical) working in aged care residental facilities. Content includes:

·         The 8 senses and the impact of aging

·         How sensory modulation works

·         Applications when working with the elderly and in aged care

·         Using the PEO model

·         Ensuring sensory modulation is SAIM

·         Introducing sensory modulation into your work practice

·         Questions

Sensory Approaches in OT Mental Health Practice: Adopting a Sensory Lens to enhance functional outcomes for consumers

Presented by: Michelle Taylor, Julie O'Sullivan and Carolyn Fitzgibbon

This workshop is suitable for Occupational Therapists of all levels of experience and working in all areas of healthcare (including students).

The workshop will outline the theory and provide practical strategies essential to integrate sensory approaches into OT service delivery. It will support the development of skills and proficiency in developing a sensory lens, enabling OTs to apply the concepts and strategies to any number of occupational roles and functions to promote functional gains and independence for people. Sensory approaches are particularly useful for clients who become so emotional that they are unable to use the thinking part of their brain.

Workshop content will include:

·         A brief contextual summary (definitions, theory, evidence base)

·         Introduction to the sensory system and sensory preferences

·         Introduction to the concept of a 'sensory lens'

·         Application of a sensory approach in the areas of assessment, clinical interventions and environment.

·         Embedding sensory approaches in service delivery with practical examples, case studies and exercises to brainstorm strategies to implement in the workplace

·         Building on sensory skill base - additional techniques/ training/resources/ education options.

Webinars:

USING SENSORY INPUT TO CHANGE HOW YOU FEEL: USING SENSORY MODULATION IN PRACTICE

Duration: approx 90mins

What topics will we cover?

Sensory modulation is a treatment modality that uses sensory input (including sight, sound, taste, smell, touch and movement) to change how a person feels. It is easy to use and effective for all people regardless of age, gender, ethnicity and health issues because it is safe, appropriate, individualised and meaningful to the individual. This 90 minute webinar will explain what sensory modulation is, why it works and how it can be used effectively to change feelings, reduce stress and enhance functioning. To help consolidate understanding, the application of sensory modulation to manage anxiety and improve sleep will be explored in detail. Additional resources for further learning will also be identified.

About this Webinar

Delivery Method:            Online

Overview:  Sensory modulation involves supporting and guiding people to find effective ways to change how they feel by using their senses.  Sensory input can include sight, smell, sound, movement, touch and deep pressure. In doing so, individuals can acquire adaptive skills in self soothing and self -management to better cope with illness symptoms as well as address emotional and behavioural responses to stress.

Suggested Audience:  Mental Health Clinicians, Workers in Primary Care, Non-Government and Not for Profit Sectors, People working in educational and developmental sectors.

Learning Objectives:

This two hour on-demand webinar will look at:

o    Helpful definitions relating to sensory modulation

o    The use of sensory modulation to change mood & stress levels

o    The powerhouse sensory systems

o    Sensory Environments, Spaces and Rooms

o    Sensory Interventions, including sensory items, sensory kits and sensory diets

 Targeted neuroscience explaining:

How & why sensory approaches work

The role of sensory modulation in the treatment of trauma

Exploration of the E4 approach and integrating into clinical practice:

o    ExplainingHow do you raise sensory modulation with your clients?

o    ExploringHow do you introduce and education your clients about using sensory modulation?

o    EmbeddingHow do you adopt sensory informed approaches into your day to day practice?

o    EvaluatingHow do you know it’s working? How do you measure its effectiveness?
