M. Ganley

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and highly accessible read

Reviewed in Australia on 10 February 2021

a disclosure. One of the authors of this book, Julie O’Sullivan, is one of my dearest friends.
I should also admit when I first heard she’d written this book my excitement for her was tinged with a little jealousy. I’d always imagined by my mid-40s I would have written a book or two. I remember telling Julie how excited I was for her, but that the book was probably not for me. I was wrong.

I had assumed the book was really for mental health practitioners. While I am not a mental health practitioner, having read it, I am sure if would be of benefit to anyone working in that space.

While not a practitioner I do make use of mental health services. I guess in the jargon I’m a consumer but something about that term doesn’t quite work for me.

In any case, the book is great for anyone wanting to understand more about their own mental health and to consider new techniques for supporting their mental health.

As the title says, it’s a resource manual. As a lay person, I found Part 1 the most useful. The latter sections could be read more quickly, but I’d still recommend reading them as some of the practical examples and the worked through illustrations are very helpful in cementing the concepts discussed in part 1 of the book.

The writing style is highly accessible, with a positive, organised, can-do attitude that encouraged me to read on.

I spent a quiet Sunday afternoon reading this book. Time very well spent.
